Mr. Dani Appave Senior Maritime Specialist ILO Sectoral Activities Branch International Labour Office (ILO) Mr. Appave talks about his early career as a seafarer having entered the profession leaving his home in Mauritius as a sixteen year old. After this he worked as a consultant for the United Nations Organization and later joined the International Labour Organization as a maritime specialist. He acknowledges that it was his original intention to return to continue his seagoing career however, events overtook him and he remained with the ILO. He has worked extensively on the ILO Maritime Labour Convention of 2006 (MLC 2006) which has updated all of the previous ILO maritime related conventions into one consolidated one. This is with one exception, ILO 108 was replaced by ILO 185, adopted in 2002. ILO 185 dealing with the seafarers identification documents, sadly even at this time, many countries have yet to ratify this convention. Congressman Bob Gibbs Urges Support for The "Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act "
Congressman Bob Gibbs, Chairman of the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee, made the following statement during floor debate of HR 2838, The "Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act of 2011." "Mr. Speaker, I rise in strong support of HR 2838, the "Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act of 2011," and in particular Title VII of the bill, the "Commercial Vessel Discharges Reform Act of 2011." "Ballast water, while a necessity to maintain the stability of large vessels during waterborne navigation, has always recognized as one of the ways invasive aquatic nuisance species are transported globally and introduced into coastal waters where they did not live before. "Numerous invasive species have been introduced into US waters through ballast water discharges. One of the most well known is the zebra mussel in the Great Lakes, which has caused millions of dollars of damage to infrastructure. "Current efforts to reduce the risk of invasive species being introduced through ballast water discharges are haphazard, contradictory, and ineffective. "The management of ballast water currently is governed differently by the Coast Guard, the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as by an assortment of international, state, and territorial regulations. "As a result, vessels engaged in interstate and international commerce are required to meet several different standards for the management of ballast water, some of which are not technologically achievable or verifiable ...

Oil Rig Explosion and Offshore Disaster | Maritime Attorney
www.doyleraizner.com | 888-571-1001 | Doyle Raizner LLP Wherever the investigation of the cause of the off shore oil rig explosion and sinking of Transoceans offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon points to as the ultimate causes of this particular explosion, it points to an overwhelming need for closer oversight of the companies operating offshore. Both the Mineral Management Service (MMS), the Department of Interior agency primarily responsible for leasing and overseeing hydrocarbon operations on the Continental Shelf of the United States, as well as the United States Coast Guard, need more resources to meet the challenges of better and more consistent inspections and investigations. Unfortunately, the Coast Guard is already overworked, charged not just with safeguarding our coastline but also with leading roles in the War on Terrorism and trying to get a handle on the flood of imported containers and shipping that marks modern commerce. The lawyers at Doyle Raizner LLP offer experienced legal representation on behalf of people who have been hurt or killed in offshore oil rig platform explosions. We assist victims in their families to recover benefits and other forms of compensation to which they may be entitled as a result injuries caused by explosions on offshore oil drilling platforms or units. http
